Be inspired at York Gate

York Gate, located near Leeds, is a truly enchanting destination, boasting a magical one-acre garden that has earned Grade II National Heritage status. Rooted in the ethos of the Arts and Crafts movement, this garden is a testament to the beauty and creativity of its designers.

With its diverse plant combinations and inspirational garden rooms, York Gate stands out as one of the premier small gardens globally, offering visitors a delightful and charming day out.

Throughout the seasons, York Gate reveals its splendour in a kaleidoscope of colours and textures. In spring and summer, vibrant tulips, overflowing borders, lush tropical plants and succulent exotics paint a picturesque scene, complemented by a meadow bursting with wildflowers and teeming with wildlife. As autumn descends and winter sets in, the garden’s timeless structure takes centre stage, showcasing intricate patterns, meticulously sculpted topiaries and a captivating display of snowdrops and colourful gems against the backdrop of the ancient Adel woods.

The story of York Gate is not only one of natural beauty but also of generosity and philanthropy. Following the passing of Sybil Spencer, the garden was bequeathed to the charity Perennial in 1994, with the noble purpose of aiding individuals in the horticultural industry. From April 3rd to October 31st, visitors can immerse themselves in the wonders of York Gate, open Wednesday to Sunday. As a recipient of the prestigious Travellers’ Choice award in 2022 and 2023, York Gate is an award-winning visitor attraction. The garden’s plant centre offers a wide array of plants, including those propagated from its own grounds, while the gift shop features seasonal cards, stationery and gifts tailored to gardening enthusiasts. Additionally, the on-site café delights visitors with delectable treats made from homegrown produce.

York Gate serves as a poignant reminder of the indispensable role that gardens play in our lives. Not only do they provide sustenance and solace, but they also bear witness to the dedication and passion of those who tend to them. Yet for many individuals working in horticulture, the path can be arduous, marked by seasonal work, modest wages and reliance on familial support. With a notable increase in demand for assistance, Perennial remains the sole charity in the UK dedicated to supporting those in horticulture and their families, relying on the generosity of supporters to continue its vital work.

The garden is conveniently located at Back Church Lane, Leeds LS16 8DW, and welcomes visitors from April 3rd to October 31st, Wednesday to Sunday, from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Admission is priced at £10, with an option to include gift aid for £12.50, ensuring that every visit contributes to the preservation of this horticultural gem and the invaluable support it provides to the industry.
