By 2025, it’s estimated that over one million people in the UK will have a diagnosis of dementia – and almost all of us will know someone living with the condition. Dementia can affect anyone but is most common in people aged 65 and over so at Home Instead we are very familiar with the condition through the work that we do.

There is no cure for dementia, but a lot can be done not only to support people living with Dementia but also for those who care for them. Home Instead believe that lives can remain joyous even with a Dementia diagnosis and we are here to do just that! Our highly skilled team will support both you and your loved one through your journey.

How can homecare benefit those living with Dementia?

We have learnt that for those living with dementia, keeping things familiar is so important. Home Care can be the solution to making sure your loved one is cared for within the comfort of their own home.

  • It offers a safer environment with fewer hospital admissions.

  • It allows them to stay in a familiar environment, which can help keep memories.

  • They receive constant companionship from both carers and loved ones.

  • They can maintain their routine and independence.

When it comes to dementia care we are pioneers. We have a bespoke curriculum for our care professionals that is approved by City & Guilds and tailored specifically for the home care setting. Our clients families feel secure knowing their loved ones are getting the best treatment possible because it was developed by leading medical professionals from across the world, including experts in dementia, ageing, and healthcare.

As the disease progresses, we also see that the need for help with personal care increases. It is best to look into the different care options available to you before getting to this point. Home Instead provide support not only with personal care but can also support with medication which can become difficult to manage for the client.

This year there has been encouraging progress with breakthroughs in new drugs that will slow the progression of this difficult disease. But for those of us delivering care to those who need it now, we know that knowledge and understanding provide the most important opportunity to reach people, empower them, and create supportive, compassionate communities.

At Home Instead Wetherby, North Leeds & Horsforth, we’re committed to fostering compassionate communities through free training and support sessions to ensure that support and care are accessible to everyone.

Heather Welsh, Home Instead’s Community Networker and Dementia Friends Ambassador, has been delivering a whole host of training and activity sessions locally for over a decade including:

  • Dementia Friends Sessions for the local community to improve knowledge and understanding.

  • Monthly Memory Drop In sessions to provide signposting and advice for those affected by dementia and their loved ones with dementia care sector specialists.

  • Weekly Chairobics Exercise classes supporting mobility and co-ordination.

  • Information Talks supported by specialists on Dementia from Alzheimer’s Society.

Every month Heather delivers a number of Dementia Friends Sessions throughout organisations in West Yorkshire including leading superstores, Morrisons, Tesco’s and GP surgeries, to upskill their team, enhance their understanding, and be able to provide more dementia friendly focused services.

As dementia continues to affect more lives, being informed and understanding is no longer optional; we feel it has become a community responsibility.

We invite you to join us in understanding dementia. These sessions go beyond education; they’re a pledge to support and empower our community. Whether dementia has touched your life or you’re seeking to broaden your knowledge, we welcome you to organise a free session. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
