Nestled within the heart of RHS Garden Harlow Carr, the Harrogate Arms Café is a delightful blend of historic splendour and contemporary culinary excellence.
This café, located in an elegant building dating back to the early Victorian era, not only offers a delightful pause for visitors to these inspirational gardens but also serves as a reminder of the rich spa heritage of these grounds. With healthy dishes and colourful treats, visitors will find that the café’s menu is deeply rooted in the garden’s own produce, ensuring a fresh and flavourful experience.
A Historic Gem
The Harrogate Arms Café, a Grade II listed building constructed around 1844, is steeped in history. Originally an early Victorian hotel, it was closely associated with the Harlow Carr Spa, a popular destination for those seeking the therapeutic benefits of Harrogate’s natural springs. These springs, known for their milder waters compared to the stronger sulphur and iron-rich springs found elsewhere in Harrogate, attracted visitors from far and wide. Though the exact origins of these springs remain somewhat mysterious, their influence on the area’s development is undeniable. Today, the Harrogate Arms Café retains this legacy, offering a glimpse into the past while providing a modern, welcoming space for today’s guests.
A Celebration of Local Produce
One of the standout features of the Harrogate Arms Café is its commitment to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Much of the fresh produce comes directly from RHS Harlow Carr’s own Kitchen Garden, only a few meters away. This dedication to home grown produce not only supports sustainable practices, has zero food miles, but also ensures that each dish is packed with flavour and nutritional value.
The café opens at 9.30am and offers a variety of breakfast options that cater to all tastes, with vegan, vegetarian and gluten free choices available. Whether you prefer a bacon roll or a lighter choice such as a granola pot topped with fresh fruit from the garden or a selection of croissants and pastries, you’ll find something to suit your palate. The café’s organic, regenerative coffee and tea selection, sourced from curated suppliers, perfectly complements these morning treats.
At lunchtime, the menu transforms into a showcase of seasonal and garden-fresh ingredients. Soups of the day are crafted from the finest produce, offering a warm, comforting start to your meal. Sandwiches feature gourmet fillings such as salt baked beetroot, babaganoush puree, grilled globe artichoke and rosemary on focaccia or sliced salami, soused and slightly pickled onion with blue stilton on ciabatta, all enhanced by herbs and vegetables from the Kitchen Garden.
Homemade quiches are another highlight that celebrates the garden’s bounty. Each bite reveals the depth of flavour that only fresh, locally grown ingredients can provide. Salads are vibrant and colourful, mixing a variety of heirloom tomatoes, peppers and freshly picked salad leaves all tossed in delicious dressings that accentuate their natural tastes.
The Harrogate Arms Café offers an array of tempting desserts too. From classic English scones served with clotted cream and jam to indulgent chocolate brownies and a slice of Victoria sponge cake decorated with edible flowers, a treat like this is the perfect way to round off your visit. Check the opening times as the garden closes earlier in winter months.
